Bears' wideout Jeffery still not able to practice

Alshon Jeffery (calf), Ryan Mundy (hip), Marquess Wilson (hamstring) and Chris Pantale (illness) did not practice when the Bears returned to Halas Hall on Monday.

The windy session was in shorts and shells and was one of four practices this week before they travel to Cincinnati for their third preseason game Saturday night.

Jeffery was not present during practice, and John Fox said the team's top wideout continues to be day-to-day.

"I think it's all critical. It's better when you're out there, regardless of what position or what person you're talking about. He's day-to-day," Fox said. "When they clear him medically and we feel that's the smartest thing to do, he'll be out there. I won't be able to tell you until we get closer to game day."

Fox was asked if he is worried Jeffery's injury will linger into the start of the regular season.

"I worry about everything," he said. "It comes with the territory. We prefer him out there and he's doing everything he can to get out there. It's nobody's fault. It's not his fault. It's not our fault. It's part of football."

With Jeffery and Wilson absent, along with Kevin White, Jay Cutler's group of receivers included Eddie Royal, Josh Bellamy and Rashad Lawrence.

"It's a challenge," Fox said about working with new group of wideouts. "It's part of football, so you deal with it. It gives other guys opportunities to get a chance to look at them."

Quick hits:

The Bears placed an emphasis on drills in the red zone and near the goal line, with a highlight being a Jay Cutler to Martellus Bennett touchdown. Bennett showed sound concentration on the juggling catch with Pernell McPhee in coverage. ... The longest plays of the day included a Cutler to Eddie Royal connection, a Josh Bellamy leaping catch and David Fales hitting Blake Annen up the seam.

O-line update:

There remains a clear competition at right tackle between Charles Leno and Jordan Mills with neither taking all the first-team reps.

Meanwhile, the Bears signed guard Lucas Nix to a one-year contract and waived injured tackle/guard Jason Weaver.

Nix is a 6-foot-5, 325-pound former Oakland Raider who had been an undrafted free agent in 2012 out of Pittsburgh.
