Two homes hit by lightning in Hinsdale
Lightning strikes damaged two homes in Hinsdale as severe storms roared through the area Sunday night, authorities said Monday.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters said a lightning strike sparked a fire shortly before midnight at a house on the 500 block of Walker Street. Emergency crews arrived to find the family had safely evacuated as flames were venting from the roof of the house.
The fire was extinguished within minutes, authorities said. Firefighters from Clarendon Hills, LaGrange, Pleasantview, Western Springs, Westmont, LaGrange Park, Lemont and Oakbrook Terrace assisted with search, salvage and overhaul operations.
At roughly the same time, another house was struck by lightning on the 800 block of south Grant, causing the chimney to crumble. The resident told firefighters he heard a clap of thunder followed by a loud noise. When he went outside he found the chimney had crashed into his yard.
Authorities said the strike did not cause a fire and damage was estimated at $10,000.
