Teen musicians perform concert for seniors

There are many kinds of activities for kids to do during the summer. Three teens - Fei Wu, William Dai and LeAnne Lin from Vernon Hill Middle School South - decided to host a concert at Victory Centre of Vernon Hills Assisted Living on June 28.

Fei, William and LeAnne wanted to use this opportunity to cheer seniors up with music and also help foster meaningful relationships between themselves and their elders.

The teens are also level 8 piano students at Jennifer Cohen's piano studio. To prepare for the concert, the kids have been rehearsing since summer break started. They selected and practiced the music pieces for the concert and also prepared brochures and a concert poster.

After all the hard work, the concert was a great success. One senior said she didn't think this kind of event had been done at the center before.

She said to Fei, "Honey, this is great! Your piano pieces were wonderful. Are you going to have this more often? Are you going to come back soon?"

Another senior held LeAnne's hand and said, "Honey, you sang so beautifully, made me cry."

One told William, "That was incredible," after the concert.

It was a wonderful experience for these three kids. They enjoyed spending time with the seniors and also learned important life skills like teamwork and how to host, prepare and rehearse for a concert. Because this experience was so much fun, these teens are thinking about making it a summer tradition.
