Artist call for third annual "Home is Where the Art Is"

HOPE Fair Housing Center invites artists to submit work that portrays their vision of Community as Home for this celebration of the 47th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act and HOPE's efforts to create greater housing opportunities for all.

Submit works made within the last 3 years. "Home Is Where the Art Is" will be curated by HOPE Fair Housing Center. The artist competition will be judged by a committee of three members of the art community.

The competition and gala will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Elgin Artspace, 51 S. Spring St. in Elgin.

The first prize will be $1,000, $500 for second prize, $250 for third prize, and $100 for People's Choice Award. Artwork will be available on exhibition and available for sale at Artspace from April 11-18.

The application deadline is Thursday, Jan. 15. Artists will be informed of their acceptance by Jan. 30.

The exhibit will be March 25 to April 1. Drop off work at Artspace Elgin. If accepted into the exhibition, artists are responsible for dropping off or shipping their artwork. Call Artspace to arrange a drop off date at (847) 214-2922.

Accepted artists gain free entry into event. It will be an open bar, food, raffle, and art competition. Artists are encouraged to be present. Invite friends and family for a stronger chance at the People's Choice Award!

HOPE's work includes individual advocacy and community reinvestment initiatives, particularly in communities of color harmed by the foreclosure crisis. It is currently working in Elgin to provide down payment and closing cost assistance for homebuyers, rehabilitation and resale of foreclosed and vacant properties, and collaboration with organizations providing advocacy and resident services. Home Is Where the Art Is is a celebration of HOPE's vision of and commitment to communities as places we can all call home. What does "community as home" mean to you?

HOPE Fair Housing Center is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization serving Northern and North Central Illinois. HOPE works to create greater housing opportunities for all, and to ensure everyone has the chance to live in the home of their choice free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, familial status, or any other characteristics protected under state or local laws. HOPE accomplishes this through education, outreach, enforcement, training, and advocacy.
