What suburban schools will be closed Wednesday

Schools across the suburbs are closing Wednesday as a blast of frigid air settles in.

School districts such as Elgin Area Unit District 46, Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200, Naperville Unit District 203, Indian Prairie Unit District 204, Palatine Township Elementary District 15 and many more have announced closings.

The high tomorrow is expected to barely get above 0 degrees; the low is expected to be -8, but the wind chill is the real story. With wind gusts up to 40 mph, the windchill is expected to hit -35 degrees, forecasters say.

And that's too cold for kids to be walking to school or waiting outside for buses, educators fear.

The lower the windchill, the faster frostbite can occur if you are outside.

“When wind chill temperatures get into extreme ranges, exposed flesh can freeze quickly. If folks venture outdoors in these wind chill temperatures, and they are not properly bundled up, they may risk frostbite or even death,” said Dave Kellenbenz, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service.
