Latest weather: No big storm, White Christmas unlikely
If you're still dreaming of a white Christmas, you may need to keep dreaming.
The winter storm watch for the Chicago area was canceled.
Today we're looking at dense fog and rain for most of today with temperatures staying around 40 during the day.
You can expect the winds to shift this afternoon to the north, pulling colder air in. That's when we'll see temperatures start to fall to around 30 and we may (and by may, I mean it's very unlikely) see a little bit of snow. What snow we do get will likely melt as it hits the warm ground and streets, making for slushy driving conditions at the worst.
"Crews, plows and equipment are ready to be dispatched, and we have ample amounts of salt on hand, so we're prepared," said IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell. "We advise people to take extra time while traveling."
For Christmas Day, you can expect some sun and temperatures in the high 30s. On Friday, we could hit a high of 48. The weekend looks like a typical Chicago gray winter weekend with rain, but you can expect temperatures to return to normal cold on Sunday with a high in the low 30s.
We are sorry to have to dash your dreams of building a snowman this Christmas season. On the other hand, last year, we were fighting the polar vortex and 9 degree temperatures. And a major storm had ripped across the U.S., causing power outages and more than three dozen deaths.
Let's be grateful we're not living through that again - so far.
