Stevenson varsity poms team dance has inspirational message
The Stevenson varsity poms competition season starts this winter. It will end, if they qualify for the state competition, on Jan. 30.
The team has made state almost every year, but the competition has become more challenging following the incorporation of poms into IHSA. All the types of dance, such as lyrical, hip-hop, jazz and more, must compete against each other in a single category, making the competition difficult.
This year, one of the team's dances is performed to a half-music, half-poem speech about cancer, courage, and the appreciation of life.
The team brings to the floor an inspiring performance. This poem tells the story of a young boy who teaches the speaker the value of life as they share a room in the hospital. At the beginning of the poem he describes the child as “a flower that refuses to grow,” stuck in the hospital while the speaker knows he only has to spend a few days there. The poem continues until the end, leaving the audience with a touching message.
Some of the team members are extending the message of this dance into their daily lives with fundraisers and walks for cancer. A hope ribbon is on their costumes as well to honor those affected by cancer.
For those interested in seeing this performance, Stevenson is hosting a competition starting at noon Sunday, Dec. 14. Conference competition will be at 7:34 p.m. Jan. 17, also at Stevenson High School. Sectionals will be Jan. 24.
