Woman charged with delivering guns used to shoot deputies
An Elk Grove Village woman was ordered held on $100,000 bail yesterday after prosecutors say she delivered the guns that her nephew, Scott B. Peters, is accused of using in the October shootings of two McHenry County deputies. Kathryn Kriepke has been charged with delivering firearms to someone who does not possess a firearm owners identification card. Full story.
Christmas haunted house set to open in Lombard
A controversial Christmas-themed haunted house is opening Saturday in Lombard. Frightmare Before X-mas will be held Dec. 6, 13 and 20 in a strip mall at 20 Yorktown Center. The attraction, called Frightmare Before X-mas, is sponsored by Lombard Commonwealth, which was formed this fall by former members of the disbanded Lombard Jaycees. "I know there's a handful of people that are trying to stop us at every turn and have contacted Yorktown and threaten to boycott us, but Yorktown is very supportive," said Jackie West, president of Lombard Commonwealth. Ex-Bensenville cop indicted on theft charges
A DuPage County grand jury indicted former Bensenville police officer David E. Irving, 35, of Roscoe, on Tuesday and issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of theft of governmental property, not exceeding $500, and two counts of official misconduct. He's accused of stealing gas from the village gas pumps to use for personal reasons. Full story.
First gold coin shows up in Round Lake Salvation Army kettle
The first gold coin of the season showed up in a Salvation Army Red Kettle outside a Round Lake Wal-Mart over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Salvation Army officials said yesterday. The one-ounce fine gold coin is valued at about $1,200. Full story.
Carpentersville man guilty of sex assault of a child
A Carpentersville man is guilty of sexually assaulting and abusing a young child he knew, a Kane County jury decided Wednesday. The jury took 2½ hours to find Sergio Tinajero, 54, guilty of four counts of predatory sexual assault of a child and six counts of aggravated sexual abuse, officials said. Full story.
Longtime Elgin grocer, dress shop owner dies
Bernice Gromer, lifelong Elgin resident and matriarch of a chain of grocery stores in the Fox Valley area, died Tuesday at age 91. She and her husband Richard owned and operated several Gromer Supermarkets throughout the area, where she was often known to play the piano. Full story.
