Ex-Bensenville cop indicted on theft charges

A now former Bensenville police officer turned himself in Wednesday on a warrant for charges related taking gasoline for private purposes from the village's gas pumps, officials say.

A DuPage County grand jury indicted David E. Irving, 35, of Roscoe, on Tuesday and issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of theft of governmental property not exceeding $500 and two counts of official misconduct, the DuPage County state's attorney's office said in a news release.

The indictment alleges that Irving stole gasoline from village gas pumps at least three times in September of this year by pumping it into personal gas cans inside the back of his squad car and then transferring those gas cans from his squad car to his personal vehicle,

Other authorities within the Bensenville Police Department discovered the thefts and turned it over to the state's attorney's office, the release said.

A $75,000 warrant was issued for Irving, and he turned himself in Wednesday afternoon.

"It is never easy when one of your own is accused of wrongdoing," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "I would like to stress that today's charges are against one former officer and are not indicative of the professional men and women of the Bensenville Police Department. In fact, members of the Bensenville Police Department are responsible for bringing this matter to the attention of the proper authorities and for that I commend them."
