McKay-Nealis Park in Des Plaines has a New Playground
Another successful park renovation is complete, according to Paul Cathey, Superintendent of Parks and Golf Operations for the Des Plaines Park District. McKay-Nealis Park, 1755 S Maple Street, has a new ADA Accessible (American Disabilities Act) playground and is now open for play. The playground includes a play structure for two to five year olds and a separate structure for five to twelve year olds, both with age appropriate slides, climbers, and towers on an engineered wood-fiber safety surface. The equipment, installed by the Park District's Parks Department, is one of the largest playgrounds built by the department in recent years and is designed to help kids stay physically fit in a challenging, creative, inclusive atmosphere.
The structure for younger children features a lumber panel tree house, a wood plank wiggle ladder, and stand-alone musical panels. The 5-12 year old play area includes a wave horizontal ladder, an 84" belt bridge, multiple slides, a covered platform, and modern monkey bars. A new picnic table in the play area and new benches along the walkway complete the playground.
"This high profile park is one of the most visited in the community," said Cathey, "with a high-populated neighborhood, local day care facilities, and summer day campers, McKay-Nealis Park is regularly used. Now it will draw even more visitors with its new features, clean landscaping, and natural color palette."
The Park District is planning an official grand opening for spring of 2015.
