New workshops at Harper College to aid prospective adult students

When your high school years are more than a few years behind you, the prospect of going to college can be pretty intimidating. Harper College, where about 40 percent of the student body is 25 and older, recognizes busy adults will have unique needs on their path to completing a certificate or degree.

With that in mind, Harper is launching a series of workshops to help prospective adult learners find their way. All workshops take place in Building A, Room A376, on the College's main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.

Finish What You've Started: Support Services for Adult Students. 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27. Learn about services and strategies designed to help you succeed. Through discussion and activities, attendees will learn more about their particular needs and identify strategies and support services that will help them reach their academic goals. At the end of the workshop, there will be an optional session on preparation for placement tests.

Got Credit? How You Can Use Prior College Credit. 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5. Do you have previous credit from another college or university? Learn how to apply AP, Proficiency or CLEP credit to your degree or certificate at Harper. Bachelor degree options to consider after graduating from Harper will also be discussed.

Invest in Yourself: How Adult Students Pay for College. 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, and 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10. Wondering what financial assistance is available to you? Types of financial aid, what they all mean and other possible resources will be addressed. Learn to navigate the world of financial aid and get hands-on help in completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or applying for scholarships. Be sure to bring your 2013 taxes if you want help with the FAFSA.
