Hersey tops Schaumburg in matchup of MSL leaders
It was a battle between the Mid-Suburban East and West girls volleyball leaders for the championship match of the Hersey Invite on Saturday afternoon.
The host Huskies, leaders in the East, staked a claim to their own invite with a 25-21, 25-12 victory over Schaumburg.
Liz Fuerst (37 kills), Gabri Olhava (24) and Kelly Hill (15) all reached double figures on attack for the Huskies (15-4).
Olhava (18) and Fuerst (14) were top blockers while Paige Pannozzo (45), Caity Strozewski (29) and Courtney Stedman (17) led in digs.
Senior setter Courtney Stedman handed out 84 assists in the tourney and also put down 7 kills.
Schaumburg (13-5) was paced on attack by Oyinkan Akinola (51 kills), Abbie Rahn (23), Lexi Ross (8) and Jada Blackwell (7), who also had 24 setting assists.
Megan Hayes collected 37 assists along with 26 digs and 7 aces from 48-of-49 serving.
Hannah Moore led Schaumburg in digs (34) and aces (8).
Hersey and Schaumburg each went 5-0 through the first half of MSL play.
St. Viator Invite: Timothy Christian won the 28th annual St. Viator Invite winning all five of its matches.
The host Lions were 3-2 in the event, raising their record to 15-4-1 for the season. They lost to Elk Grove and Carmel.
Ellie Meyer's 69 digs and 14 aces were tops for Viator, which was led on attack by Grace Fedus (36 kills), Alyssa Forbes (16), Emily Hayes (10) and Gabi Thomas (12).
Thomas led the team with blocks 7 while freshman Michaela Mueller had 33 digs.
Senior setter Kaitlyn O'Brien handed out 77 assists.
Rolling Meadows (5-14) went 1-4 in the tourney and was led on attack by Maddie Sellergren (23 kills) and Hannah Mickey (23 kills).
Jenny Srnak and Mickey each had 9 blocks while Megan King (37 assists) and Megan Mich (42 assists) handled the setting chores.
Elk Grove earned wins over Proviso East, St. Viator and Larkin to go 3-2 in the tourney and improve to 5-12 overall.
Conant (8-10) went 1-4 in the invite.
Maine South Invite: Palatine took third place by defeating Planfield East 25-23, 27-25 to go 4-1 in the tourney.
Jess Lundell (33 kills), Meg Angelaccio (31 kills) Heather Holz and Mikkelsen (11) led the Pirates on attack.
Alyssa Kronberg led the Pirates with 56 while Sydney Christiansen handed out 99 assists
Top servers for the Pirates were Foltman (10 aces), Lundell (9), Christiansen (7), Holz (50 and Kronberg (4).
