Evaluation ordered for Wheaton teen in harassment case
One of two former Wheaton middle school students facing criminal charges in connection with the electronic posting of inappropriate images involving students and staff members has been ordered to undergo a psychosexual evaluation.
Officials said Monday the evaluation will help determine the likelihood of the 14-year-old boy engaging in future sexual misconduct and to determine the future of the case against him.
The former Edison Middle School student and another boy are each charged with several felony and misdemeanor counts of harassment by electronic communications, transmission of obscene messages, obscenity, harassment by telephone and mob action. The other boy also is charged with unlawful possession of cannabis.
Each teen faces one to three years in juvenile custody if convicted.
Judge Robert Anderson also allowed the boy to have his GPS home detention device removed, while keeping in place directions that he be supervised by his parents, forbidden from seeing the other boy and prohibited from using the Internet for anything other than school assignments.
Wheaton police began investigating "dummy" social media accounts in May that posted inappropriate images involving Edison Middle School students and staff members.
This student's next court date is scheduled for Oct. 20. The other boy is next due in court on Sept. 11.
The Wheaton case is just one of four recent cases of suburban middle and elementary school students sexting or viewing pornography.
Two students in Barrington were criminally charged with sending inappropriate images of a student to a group of classmates. Authorities in Batavia decided not to file charges after several students took nude photos of themselves and shared them with others.
And in Glen Ellyn, two fifth-grade students and a fourth-grader viewed pornographic material while at school.
