Basketball tournament raising money for St. Jude
A story in Tuesday's pre-printed Neighbor edition about a memorial basketball tournament should have said the name of the mother who donated a portion of her liver is Joni Wise.
The fourth annual Jamie Wise and Sean Toedman Memorial 3-on-3 basketball tournament, raffle and concert honors two young people who had cancer and have since died.
Toedman, a 12-year-old boy from unincorporated Cook County near Elgin, died of brain cancer in 1996.
Wise, 22, of Union, was diagnosed with pediatric cancer as a 3-year-old and died April 5 of liver failure, 19 years after her mother, Joni, donated a portion of her own liver to save her life.
David Schultz, the organizer and a West Dundee resident, has connections to both people. Toedman was his cousin-in-law, while Wise was his cousin. For the first three years, the event was named after Toedman. This year, Schultz decided to share the honor with Wise.
"I think (the event) does a lot, especially for both families - it's not easy to lose a child," Schultz said. "It's a way for them to keep their child's names alive."
The event, scheduled for Sunday, June 22, will be held at Lions Park in East Dundee. Its proceeds will support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis; the money will be donated on behalf of Toedman and Wise.
Besides two men's divisions - championship and recreation - and a women's division, organizers have also added a division for middle school boys.
Raffle prizes include a 60-inch television; a $500 landscaping package; a weekend getaway to Galena; and golf for four at Boulder Ridge Country Club, Randall Oaks Golf Club, the Golf Club of Illinois and Pinecrest Golf Club in Huntley.
A wellness fair Schultz organized will be going on at the same time nearby. The Belvederes, a local band, will play a set of five songs.
The goal is to raise $10,000 this year, and the event has already racked up between $3,000 and $4,000 in sponsorships, Schultz said.
Registration starts at 9 a.m., with the tournament following at 10:15 a.m. Signups are due by Sunday, June 15, and it costs $130 for a team of four people.
