Mundelein takes third at Hoffman Estates
Sam Nelson, Roman Tkachuk and David Everding led the way as Mundelein's boys volleyball team opened the season by finishing third in the Hoffman Estates invitational.
The Mustangs went 3-2, outlasting the host Hawks 25-17, 23-25, 25-19 in the third-place match. Mundelein fell to Naperville Central 25-9, 25-10 in the semifinals after defeating West Chicago (25-9, 25-11) and Larkin (25-16, 15-12) and losing to Hoffman Estates (25-23, 26-24) in pool play.
"Great invite," Mundelein coach George Dressen Jr. said. "The team played strong."
Nelson pounded a team-best 26 kills and served 9 aces, while Tkachuk slammed 20 kills and posted a team-best 12 blocks. Everding dished out 75 assists and served 11 aces in the tournament.
The Mustangs' other contributors included Danny Lake (16 kills), Luke Ramer (15 kills, 5 blocks) and Jake Langlie (25 digs). Nelson and Everding had 26 and 22 digs, respectively.
