Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra Presents Magical Concert and Sing-Along
SKOKIE, IL (For Immediate Release) - The Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra will present a concert full of wizardry and magic on Sunday, April 6th. The highlight of the concert will be an audience sing-along to selections from The Wizard of Oz. The show starts at 3 p.m. with a free pre-concert lecture at 2 p.m. All Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra concerts take place at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, 9501 Skokie Boulevard, Skokie, IL 60077. Parking is free.
Come dressed as your favorite wizard or witch to participate in a costume contest!
The concert will feature magical and mystical pieces spanning nearly 200 years, from Berlioz's Dreams of a Witches' Sabbath (1830) to music from Harry Potter. At intermission, audience members will be invited to the lobby to review songs from The Wizard of Oz in order to prepare for the sing-along which will take place during the second half of the concert. Lyrics will be printed in the programs and will also be displayed on a screen as the music plays. The concert will also feature music from The Lord of the Rings, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries", The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Dukas, and Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky.
"It's going to be a concert we can all have fun with," says Francesco Milioto, conductor and musical director of the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra. Milioto also commented on how the portrayal of magic is very similar in each of the pieces to be performed-even though the program covers such a wide time span. "The musical language of the pieces feels the same. The way that John Williams portrays the feeling of magic and mysticism in Harry Potter is so similar to how Wagner did it in the 1800s. It's remarkable how this musical language hasn't really changed over all these years."
Founded in 1962, the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra has been presenting professional quality classical music concerts in the northern suburbs of Chicago for 52 years. The orchestra's purpose is to promote and sustain a community orchestra and to encourage the talents of young musicians.
Tickets for the April 6th concert start at $30 for adults, $27 for seniors, and $10 for teens and young adults. Children 12 and younger are admitted free with a paid adult.
