Library Offers Astronomy Programs Taught by Adler Planetarium Expert

A series of monthly astronomy programs are coming to the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Rd. Geared toward the astronomy novice, these Astronomy 101 programs will be taught by Michelle Nichols, Master Educator for NASA Forum Programs at Chicago's Adler Planetarium. Interested persons are welcome to attend any number of the free, 90-minute sessions. “Our Earth and Moon” will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21 in the library's Rasmussen South Room on the second floor. Nichols will present an overview of the Earth and Moon, their formations, evolutions and structures.

“Planets All around Us” is scheduled from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19 in the Rasmussen South Room. Nichols will discuss the unique aspects and similarities of the planets orbiting our Sun, including those categorized as terrestrial, Jovian, minor and dwarf. She will additionally discuss the insights meteors may provide regarding the formation of our Solar System.

“Using Your Eyeballs” will be held from 7:30- to 9 p.m., Monday, March 31 in the Rasmussen South Room. Participants will learn about celestial bodies which can be seen without a telescope, including moon phases, eclipses, planets, stars and more.

In addition to these programs, the library has astronomy resources including books and DVDs which can be found in the 523 sections of the non-fiction book racks and in the Audiovisual Department. There are also astronomy magazines available for check-out on the second floor.
