Glencoe’s Aitz Hayim Brings Jewish Perspective to Christmas

Although Christmas brings challenges to many Jews, Glencoe’s Aitz Hayim Center for Jewish Living looks at the holiday as an opportunity to bring a Jewish perspective to the celebration. Recognizing that the standard Christmas joke is that Jews go out for Chinese food and watch movies, on December 25 Aitz Hayim will be preparing a kosher Chinese dinner…and showing a movie.

The dinner, movie and lively discussion will take place on December 25 at the Bernard Weinger JCC, 300 Revere Drive, Northbrook, from 5PM until 8 PM. The cost of the dinner is $25 per person until December 23 and $45.00 after that. The community is invited to attend both the dinner (at $25) or to watch the film and join in the discussion for $5.00.

Meat and vegetarian Chinese food will be served followed by the showing of “The Rabbi's Cat”, an animated film adapted from a graphic novel involving a talking cat that challenges beliefs about God, death, lust and truth. Creative director, cartoonist and Aitz Hayim member, Ken Krimstein will guide the group through this beautiful sardonic film.

Also discussed will be last years popular musical “Les Miserables”, which offers life lessons of its own and was written by Tunisian, Hungarian and South African Jews.

For reservations (space is limited) call the Aitz Hayim office at 874-835-3232.
