Park district adds 17 acres for community with Mundelein land purchase

With Mundelein Park & Recreation District's (MPRD) (www.mundeleinparks.org) recent land purchase, the benefits are far-reaching for the public and the environment.

Located on the south side of Mundelein, the 17-acre acquisition is located just off of West Shady Lane. The site's “benefits” include dense woodlands, valuable wetlands and wildlife habitats. It also provides for future recreation opportunities including playing fields, parking and improved access/connection to the Park District's existing Clearbrook Park.

Restoration and site amenities will be considered during a master planning process, with a goal of completing the project within a three-year period. MPRD's criterion for selecting land for purchase includes its potential for preservation, restoration and enhancement. This specific location was ideal, ranking high as a desired area for a park/land acquisition in a community input survey.

“This was a great opportunity. It has an abundance of natural resources and allows us to add to our mix of quality offerings, particularly in the neighborhoods to the south,” said Margaret Resnick, Director of Mundelein Park & Recreation District.

MPRD actively pursues partnerships with other agencies to maximize resources, including Openlands, (www.openlands.org) one the oldest metropolitan conservation organizations in the nation, who assisted with the coordination of the sale of the parcel.

MPRD encourages Mundelein residents and visitors of all communities to take advantage of its many outdoor and recreational opportunities which now includes more than 800 acres, 33 parks and host of facilities and award-winning programs for all ages.
