State’s a near miss for Barrington
Barrington’s girls golf team missed a trip to the Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur by 1 stroke on Monday at the Rockford Guilford sectional.
But the Fillies (336), who placed fourth behind Crystal Lake Central (328), Naperville North (332) and St. Charles North (335), will have two individuals playing in the IHSA Class AA state finals.
And they will be two of the youngest.
Freshmen Shivani Majmudar (81) and Reena Sulkar (83) were among the 10 individuals from non-qualifying teams to earn a spot in Decatur.
Waubonsie Valley junior Bing Singhsumalee earned medalist honors in the sectional with a 73 at Ingersoll Golf Course in Rockford.
“It’s heartbreaking,” Majmudar said of losing a state team bid by 1 stroke. “Everybody kept thinking about that one putt they could have made that one putt. I’m really happy with my back-nine score (38).”
Barrington would have had the tiebreaker over St. Charles North for the third slot to Decatur.
Sulkar fired an 83 to capture the ninth outright at-large berth for Barrington.
The ninth-grader was 2 shots off the 81 that Majmuder authored.
“Going (to state) as a freshman is exciting; maybe they have a chance to go all four years,” Barrington coach Jodi Schoeck said. “We’re excited for Shivani and Renee.”
Schoeck had a difficult time composing herself as she discussed the Fillies’ season.
“It’s tough,” Schoeck of the razor-thin loss to St. Charles North. “At the beginning of the season, nobody thought they would see use (at the sectional). We didn’t even qualify for the sectional as a team last year. It’s a testament to the girls’ work ethic. That one stroke is going to stick with them for a while.”
