Chicken Workshop Offered at Grayslake Farm

An increasing number of suburban residents are interested in raising chickens as a fun and educational hobby that also provides fresh eggs. To learn more about raising chickens at home, register for the “Backyard Chicken” workshop at the Prairie Crossing Learning Farm in Grayslake. The workshop is from 9-12 on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Prairie Crossing Learning Farm has raised chickens for many years, incorporating them in a variety of farm-based educational programs. Participants will learn about chicken breeds and behavior, best practices in feeding and housing, local ordinances, and more. The workshop also includes a visit with the Learning Farm's flocks of pasture-raised chickens.

According to Sharon Gaughan, Learning Farm Education Program Director, “as a farm set in the suburbs, the Prairie Crossing Learning Farm is uniquely positioned to serve as a resource for suburban homesteaders – those looking to explore new homesteading topics or to further hone their existing skills. Our chickens are popular with farm visitors of all ages, and it's not surprising that some people want to raise them at home. How many pets can you name that are relatively easy to care for and provide you with breakfast?”

The Prairie Crossing Farm is located at 32400 N. Harris Road in Grayslake, inside the Prairie Crossing conservation development. The $30 workshop is for adults and requires advance registration at www.prairiecrossing.com/farm/learning.php.

The mission of the Prairie Crossing Learning Farm is to educate and inspire people to value healthy food, land and community through experiences on the farm. Information is at www.prairiecrossing.com/farm/learning.php.
