Enjoy a daylong science adventure

Submitted by University of Illinois Extension

Explore the science of maps, streams and exercise during the third annual Science Champions Investigate Future Innovations (SCI FI 3) event on Saturday, Oct. 19. Hosted by the 4-H Youth Development programs of DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties, this daylong science adventure will take place at Hoover Forest Preserve in Yorkville.

“SCI FI 3 provides a unique opportunity for children, ages 8 to 12, to expand their science experience while learning about GPS exploration, stream monitoring and exercise physiology,” said Deanna Roby, 4-H Youth Development Educator with University of Illinois Extension. “SCI FI 3 participants get to do hands-on experiments and can make new friends, all while gaining new skills.”

The event will feature the 2013 4-H National Science Experiment, “Maps and Apps,” as well as activities related to environmental and health sciences. Youth will work with University of Illinois Extension personnel, as well as specially-trained 4-H Science Ambassadors.

“We have an excellent team of teens in our 4-H Science Ambassador program,” said Donna Nuger, 4-H youth development educator with University of Illinois Extension. “At SCI FI 3, youth participants will get the benefit of working with these older peers, who strive to involve kids in science and engage them in learning.”

The 2013 SCI FI event will be held from 8:45 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Hoover Forest Preserve, 11285 W. Fox Road, in Yorkville, about two miles west of town. The cost of the program is $25, which includes program materials and a small backpack. Participants will need to bring a nonperishable sack lunch.

Space is limited for the event, and registration is open now until Wednesday, Oct. 9. To learn more about SCI FI 3 or to register, go to web.extension.illinois.edu/dkk/scifi.
