Many stop by for annual National Night Out at Schaumburg Park District

There was a great turnout for this year's National Night Out!

Schaumburg Park District's Meineke Recreation Center and Park hosted one of Schaumburg's 21 National Night Out locations on Aug. 6.

The nationwide event, organized by the National Association of Town Watch, is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and generate support for local anticrime programs. The activities at the District featured police and firefighter visits, photo ops with McGruff the Crime Dog, a DJ, games, piñatas and swimming.

“The event was a success,” said Doug Sieder, manager of Meineke Recreation Center. “We had firefighters, police officers and village officials join in the activities in the park.”

Throughout the night, the community came together through games, food and fun.

Community partners supported the event through treats and games. Culver's handed out cups of delicious lemon ice. Employees from Target of Schaumburg gave out stickers and toys for children and participated in games including a water balloon toss.

The District's always reliable volunteers also barbecued food for event participants.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for the community to show their support for those who serve us and have a free night out on the town,” said Sieder.

The District holds many special events throughout the year for all ages. The next event, Sport Center Family Fun Night, is set for Sept. 20 at the Sport Center, 1141 W. Irving Park Road.
