Twenty-first Star Chapter DAR Recognizes Outstanding American History Scholars

The Twenty-first Star Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was pleased to present certificates at Maine South, Maine East, and Maine West high schools Social Science Departments Honors Program's. The American History Scholars are selected from junior history students in the spring by each faculty. These students receive a "Certificate of Award for Outstanding Work in American History". From this group, each school announces the top student.

The Outstanding American History Scholar this year from Maine West was Astra Oshana. Twenty-first Star Chapter DAR member, Linda Andrews honored Astra and nine other Maine West students. Honors went to: Rachel Anderson, Ashley Grahn, Martha Lazarski, and Alex Romza. The Essay Finalists were: Nick Klingenburg, Jenny Lor, Mariana Oshana, Megan Sanks and Tanja Vakasin. Graduating Senior, Pha Thaprawat was awarded a scholarship from the Chapter.

At the Seventy-ninth Annual Contest sponsored by Maine East and the Twenty-first Star Chapter DAR, the Outstanding American History Scholar for this year was Terrin Jose. Twenty-first Star Chapter DAR members, Linda Andrews and Mary Johnson, honored Terrin and six other Maine East students. Honors went to: Fidel Escarez, Syed Matin, Batmanlai Ontogtokah, Priya Patel, Swetha Sajan and Kamal Talukder. Graduating Senior, Teodora Ivanova was awarded a scholarship from the Chapter.

The Peggy Ross Best American History Scholar for 2013, from Maine South was Nicole Hassman. The Peggy Ross Best American History Scholar Award is named for a young woman whose love of learning and passion for history were equally matched by her keen intellect, strong moral character, positive attitude, and courage. Twenty-first Star Chapter DAR members, Linda Andrews and Mary Johnson honored Nicole. Graduating Senior and last year's winner, Natalie Kirchhoff was awarded a scholarship from the Chapter. Congratulations to all of these outstanding students.

Any woman age 18 and older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
