Community Members to be "Locked-Up" to Benefit MDA

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is on the hunt for “friendly” people in the Libertyville and Mundelein communities. Are you or someone you know, known for having a “big heart?” Put a friendly warrant out for those do-gooders or turn yourself in to this year's annual MDA Lock-Up will take place on Wednesday, July 17th, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. to raise money for the MDA.

They will serve their one-hour of jail time at the MDA Jailhouse located at Libertyville's newest “Hot Spot,” Shakou, located at 625 N. Milwaukee Ave., in Libertyville. Jailbirds will receive complimentary gourmet “bread and water,” and have the opportunity to network with business executives in the community. Jailbirds will call friends, family members and business associates to ask for donations in order to make their bail of $1,600. This amount sends local kids affected by neuromuscular disease to a week-long summer camp

“Shakou is very happy to be hosting the lock up this year, being that this foundation hits very close to home for one of our owners, it is an honor to give back and have this opportunity,” said Adam Garvanian, Owner of Shakou. “Three years ago, Chrissy lost her brother to this disease, so anything we can do to give back and help is very important to all of us. We look forward to having the lock up, and raising a lot of money towards this cause.”

All jailbirds will be released with a clean record and MDA's sincerest appreciation for raising funds to help those affected by neuromuscular diseases in their communities.

“The MDA is excited to be hosting this event in the Libertyville & Mundelein areas again this year,” said Amanda Konopka, fundraising coordinator at MDA. “The communities really rallied around our cause and mission in 2011 by helping to raise more than $25,000 to help support our local summer camp and local clinics. We are hoping for that same success this year.”

All funds raised will help MDA provide a comprehensive program of services including, MDA clinics for adults and children at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, University of Illinois at Chicago and Shriners Hospital for Children and Lurie Children's Hospital; a week-long summer camp held in Ingleside, IL for kids ages 6-17 that is provided at no cost to the families; and nearly $1 million in local funding for neuromuscular disease research.

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.
