Illinois Fencers Club Continues to Bring Home Medals in Recent Tournaments

The New Trier Fencing Tournament took place on Saturday, May 18th. at the New Trier High School in Winnetka, Il. Illinois Fencers Club (IFC) attended the tournament with great expectations and were not disappointed. Jakub Nowak came away with gold and silver medals, finishing first in Y14 mixed epee and second in Y14 mixed foil. Jakub is 14 years old and has been with the club for two and a half years. He says that he ”was welcomed in very quickly, and gained a lot of new friends.” For him “fencing is an interesting and amazing sport that truly exercises both body and mind”. Silver and bronze medals in Y14 epee category also belonged to IFC fencers. Andrew Vold (age 13) was 2nd and Isabelle Nasser (age 13) tied for third.

Marco Mendoza took the bronze medal for third place in the Y14 mixed foil.

Senior mixed epee at New Trier was also dominated by IFC members who took 4 of the top 8 places with Misha Heber taking the gold medal, John Lartz the bronze, Timothy Glass 5th place and Jack Gillman 8th who also earned a new “E” rating.

Misha who won the mixed event is an accomplished fencer with 9 years of experience. He says that his life has been formed around fencing, and he puts a lot of time and effort into fencing. To him fencing is a passion. “Through it, (he has) been able to tackle everything life has thrown” at him. He gives a lot of credit for his accomplishments in fencing and life to his coach Ina Harazinova. He plans to keep fencing “as long as he can hold an epee”. Way to go Misha!

On Saturday, May 25th, fencers from the Illinois Fencers Club (IFC) attended the Windy City Tournament held at the Menomonee Club in Chicago. Zimo Zhu won the Y14 Mixed Epee event, while Sasha Heber placed 3rd in the Open Mixed Epee. Misha Heber also made the top 8 in the Open, finishing 6th.

On Sunday, June 2nd, at Central Community Center in Mount Prospect, Illinois Fencers Club will be hosting the 2013 IFC Youth Tournament in all three weapons for fencers up to 14 years old. Come and see us!

In addition, on June 15th IFC is offering a clinic that will provide an opportunity for the fencers who qualified for the 2013 Summer Nationals to participate in a full day event with long duration and high intensity, very close to the type of workload at the Summer Nationals.

The Illinois Fencers Club promotes and teaches the Olympic sport of fencing to students of all ages and skill levels and provides a friendly venue for members to practice their sport. It is a member operated non-for-profit sports association that has been serving beginning, recreational, and competitive fencers for more than 40 years.
