First of its kind in the Midwest: Lutheran General Physician Becomes Midwest's First to Perform Robotic Single Site Hysterectomy

As one of the national leaders in robotic surgery, Charles E. Miller, MD is once again bringing surgical innovation to his patients as he became the first physician in the Midwest to perform a hysterectomy using the single site approach for robotic surgery. Recently approved by the FDA, this revolutionary surgery not only offers the traditional benefits of robotic surgery such as a shorter recovery time, less complications including blood loss but it is a virtually scarless surgery performed through the belly button.

“The ability to perform single site hysterectomy is certainly advantageous cosmetically, as the incision is virtually hidden in the patients naval, according to Charles E. Miller, M.D. Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, IL. Until now, without the use of robotics, single site surgery has not been intuitive, has been difficult to perform, and thus has not become a popular surgical approach. Through the use of the robotic platform, instrumentation is technically easier to utilize and imaging is enhanced with high definition 3D resolution; thus barriers to traditional single site surgery have been overcome. I am grateful to Advocate Lutheran General for the opportunity to be the first physician in the Midwest to perform robotic single site hysterectomy and its continued leadership role in advancing our robotics program as well as other aspects of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.”

Although just a handful of women around the country have undergone a robotic single site hysterectomy, their overwhelming response has been very positive, including minimal recovery time.

The Center for Robotic Surgery at Advocate Lutheran General offers the most comprehensive robotic surgery program in Metropolitan Chicago. It offers a wide array of surgical procedures including robotic surgery for the treatment of numerous gynecologic conditions, cancers and other diseases. It is one of the only hospitals in Chicago to offer the single site approach for hysterectomy, as well as robotic surgery for the treatment of esophageal and liver cancers.
