District 59 getting estimate for Grove school damages
Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 is awaiting an insurance adjuster’s estimate of damages to Grove Junior High after a car plowed into a classroom at the Elk Grove Village school during spring break last week. “It’s over $100,000,” District 59 spokeswoman Betsy Boswell said of the district staff’s own assessment of needed repairs. “That’s a minimum for the building itself, not including everything that was in the classroom — furniture, computer, whiteboards, TV monitors. It’s a sizable amount of money.” The vehicle drove all the way through the classroom and into the hallway of the school at 777 Elk Grove Blvd., Boswell said. The school board will have to approve emergency repairs for the school at its regular meeting Monday, April 8. Boswell said the repair work likely won’t be completed before the end of the school year. The students who were affected will use other classrooms for the remainder of the year, she added. Charges are pending against the driver, who was being chased by police following a hit-and-run accident in Hanover Park, police said.
