Jay Stream Middle School Fundraiser Helps Feed Needy Senior
The student council of Jay Stream Middle School recently held a fundraiser to help feed a needy local senior. The students managed to raise $140 to donate to the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP,) of DuPage County, to help support the charity's Senior Citizen Project. Through this project, 121 needy, local seniors receive nutritious food and other goods to provide for their well being. The funds raised by the student council will be used to provide groceries to a needy senior.
The Student Council ran the fundraiser to ensure that needy senior citizens had access to vitamin-rich foods to maintain their health. The club was inspired to hold the fundraiser, after Kelly Colucci, advisor of the Student Council at Jay Stream Middle School, received an appeal from HSP describing the urgent needs of impoverished seniors throughout DuPage and Kane Counties. Colucci brought the appeal to the council, which motivated the students to raise money for the seniors through a fundraiser. The money was raised by holding a “Fun Night” for the sixth graders at the school. The proceeds from the ticket sales ended up bringing $140 for the council to donate for the sake of needy seniors.
The money raised by the student council will go to impoverished, local senior citizens served by HSP's Senior Citizen Project. The purpose of this program is to provide for the basic and nutritional needs of 121 needy, local seniors. HSP does so by providing monthly deliveries of 100 lbs of groceries to each of the 121 seniors in the program which include: selections of 7 fresh fruits and 8 vegetables, 7 frozen meats, 6 bags of non-perishable foods, 2 bags of paper products and personal care items. It costs $800 to fully sponsor a needy senior in the project for a year.
About The Humanitarian Service Project:
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,636 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 100 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 121 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
