"Wondering" about Naperville READS

Parents and kids alike know how hard it is to start in a public school after you're been home schooled for more than five years. But what adds to Auggie Pullman's difficulties is his severe facial deformity.

The struggles of fifth-grader Auggie Pullman are the core of “Wonder,” the Naperville READS 2013 book.

“Wonder” is really a story for families to read and discuss. It includes the uncertainties of his parents about how to cope with strangers reacting to Auggie's face, the toll this places on his older sister and how to “Choose Kind” when dealing with others.

Patrick Edwards, Ryan Wall and Quentin Palluau, members of CAN (Community Access Naperville) recently visited with Mayor George Pradel about the Naperville READS book, “Wonder.”

CAN works to integrate differently-abled adults into our community and the Naperville READS book is about trying to fit in when you stand out.

“Wonder” author, R. J. Palacio will give a presentation in Naperville on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in the Wentz Concert Hall. Free tickets are available at Anderson's Bookshop and all three Naperville Public Libraries.
