Dechter, Minor and Bihel make Round of 16
It was a good start for Lake County tennis players on the first day of the state meet Thursday.
In singles, Mundelein’s Ari Dechter, Carmel’s Brienne Minor and Warren’s Karyna Bihel each went 3-0 to advance to the Round of 16. Each player won in two sets, with Minor losing only 2 games — both to Edwardsville’s Callaghan Adams in the third round — all day.
Stevenson’s doubles team of Alexxis Kiven and Kaylin Dong were even more impressive, as they dropped only 1 game in going 3-0 in Day 1.
Also in doubles, Warren’s Courtney Sunday/Mikayla Schultz rebounded from a first-round loss that last three sets to win a pair of matches in the back draw.
Carmel’s Maclaine Edwards/Emily Rhine lost their second-round match but responded with a win in the back draw to earn the right to keep playing.
Carmel’s Megan Sullivan/Maddy O’Donnel split their four matches.
Stevenson’s Danielle Vasiliev opened with a straight-set win, lost in Round 2 and then triumphed in the back draw to stay alive.
Libertyville’s Halle Roach won her first match, before dropping her next two.
Stevenson’s Vinaya Rao lost her only two matches, same for Antioch’s doubles team of Alyssa Sheppard/Ruth Keeling.
