An Artist Paints Chicago, All of It!

Dozens of books about Chicago have been published over the years. But (so far as we know!) there's never been a book of Chicago paintings.

That void was filled on July 6 when “Chicago Brushstrokes” was released.

“Chicago Brushstrokes” is a 104-page book with a kaleidoscopic variety of Chicago scenes painted in watercolor and oil by local artist Mort Luby. Most of the images were painted en plein air on the streets, alleys, and waterways of Chicago. Others were painted in Luby's studio. The original paintings range in size from 9- by 12-inch or 30- by 40-inch.

All of the city's main attractions - from Wrigley Field to the Field Museum - are included, of course. But readers can also enjoy paintings of their favorite neighborhood hangouts, including Southport Lanes, the only bowling alley in Chicago that still employs pinboys.

Each of the 100-plus images in the book is accompanied by a brief, lively description and history of the subject.

An elegant 9 by 12-inch book printed on heavy, high gloss paper, “Chicago Brushstrokes” makes an ideal gift for die-hard Chicagoans and out-of-towners who wish they lived here. The sleek, well-organized layout of the book of the book is by Redrock Design.

Mort Luby is a former magazine publisher and Associated Press stringer who turned his lifelong love of painting into a full-time profession some 20 years ago. He has won more than 40 art awards, including four best-of-show ribbons. His work is featured in public and private collections worldwide. Five galleries in Chicago and Maui display his paintings.

Born on the South Side, he has lived in Old Town, in Rogers Park, on South Michigan Avenue and in various other Chicago neighborhoods. As he points out in the Introduction to the book, he's a “Chicago kind of guy.”

“Chicago Brushworks” was officially launched at a reception on July 6 at the historic Palette and Chisel Academy of Art at 1012 N. Dearborn. The reception was also the kick-off for a 10-day exhibition and show of all 100-plus paintings in the book.

“Chicago Brushstrokes” is available at bookstores all over the Chicago area. Single copies are $19.95; a box of ten is $100.
