Family of Cary man killed in Phoenix shocked
Family and friends of a former Cary man are reeling in shock by news of his killing last week in Phoenix at the hands of his girlfriend's ex-husband, police said.
Adam Moring, 29, had moved to Phoenix on Aug. 28 “to start a new life” with his girlfriend, said Adam's father John Moring of Round Lake.
David Walker, 29, is accused of killing Moring with a baseball bat, according to Phoenix police.
Police said Walker, a Chicago resident, flew to Phoenix arriving at his ex-wife's home at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Walker got in through the back door, took a baseball bat from the garage and hit Moring repeatedly in the head with the bat as he was sleeping in the bedroom with Walker's ex-wife, police said.
Walker also hit his ex-wife and forced her to drive with their two children to nearby Tempe, authorities said. He then ran away and was found in a hotel late Thursday and arrested on murder and other charges, according to news reports.
“It's very hard dealing with this,” said Moring's mother Jo Ann Hedges of Cary. “It's not a common death. It's not like he was in a car accident. It's not like he was ill. He was sleeping in bed and someone broke in and beat him with a bat. That vision is in my mind all the time.”
John Moring said Walker had been abusive toward his ex-wife and “that's why they got divorced.”
“Adam wasn't even in the picture when they got divorced,” John Moring said, adding that his son and his girlfriend had been together since 2010. “He was a really good kid. Everybody loved him. That's why it's so shocking.”
Adam Moring was a graduate of Warren Township High School. He lived with his father in Round Lake for a while, and later his mother in Cary before moving out to Arizona.
Moring has an 8-year-old daughter whom he was unable to see often because of issues with the girl's mother who lives in Waukegan, Hedges said.
That was partly the reason why he moved to Arizona for a fresh start, she added.
The family is seeking donations to help with Moring's funeral services and to transport his body back to Illinois from Arizona. Donations may be made to Adam's Fund at Wells Fargo Bank or through a PayPal account, unclebobm@cox.net.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
“Adam was a wonderful person,” Hedges said. “He was artistic. He was very good at drawing. He had a beautiful smile. Every one of his friends loved him. They are messaging me and telling me what a good guy he was.”
