Prospect runs down career win No. 150 for Stokes

Prospect coach Mike Stokes has certainly seen his share of victories during his 22 years of coaching, and the Knights coach picked up a pretty special one Thursday night at Buffalo Grove.

Senior Quentin Shaffer took first in leading Prospect to a 22-33 Mid-Suburban League East victory over Buffalo Grove at Willow Stream.

The win gave Stokes his 150th dual meet victory, with 133 coming as head coach at Prospect.

“I guess it tells you one thing — I’m old,” said Stokes, who is the dean of MSL coaches. “We’ve had some great kids at Prospect, and they have always done everything I’ve asked. I love doing this and the guys have made me look good.”

Stokes has led Prospect to 10 state meets, with eight top-10 finishes, including a second-place trophy in 1994.

Junior Steven Salvano (15:45) took second for Buffalo Grove, but the Knights took the next three spots.

Prospect took control midway through the race with senior Michael Leet (16:01), junior Max Daleiden (16:04), and junior Blake Hallman (16:05) going 3-5 for the Knights.

Freshman Kevin Salvano (16:20) and freshman Tom Cleary (16:30) took sixth and seventh place for a young Buffalo Grove team that is rebuilding after finishing fifth in Class 3A last season, a best-ever placement for the program.

“We competed, but Prospect did a great job,” said Buffalo Grove coach Jamie Klotz. “Hats off to Coach Stokes.”
