Delegate diary: Like having a rock star in your living room

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Democratic National Convention gives a handful of the everyday party faithful the chance to see the politicians they otherwise have to admire from afar, says Democratic delegate Joe Gump of Palatine. But it makes for some very full days.

On filling time before the big evening speeches:

“It is amazing how the day fills up. So I have not had much time off the entire time I’ve been here. Planned Parenthood had a rally yesterday. I also saw some of my media heroes in MSNBC. It’s like a field trip.”

An up close view of top Illinois Democrats:

“It’s like having your favorite rock star play a solo performance in your living room. I’m looking at all of these prominent Democratic speakers — who I’ve never seen but in news clips for three seconds on the 10 o’clock news — presenting extremely compelling reasons why we should re-elect Barack Obama and elect a Democratic Congress. These are very articulate people, and I’m watching it commercial-free. I’ve just been overwhelmingly impressed with it.”

On juggling responsibilities:

“I’m affiliated with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees — that’s my union. So I’m kind of wearing two hats. I’m doing this with the Democratic Party and I do other things with the labor group that I’m with, AFSCME. Between the two, I have seen some of these unbelievable speeches and have just really loved it. I feel very honored.”
