Win, then loss for Wheaton in state tourney

It was a long Friday for Wheaton in the American Legion state baseball tournament at Grimes Field in Mattoon.

Wheaton came back at 10 a.m. to finish the last two innings of its 11-3 win over Northbrook that was suspended because of rain Thursday. That set up a battle of unbeatens early Friday evening against Moline (42-6).

Wheaton fell behind early, got within a run midway through the game but couldn’t get anything else going offensively as it lost 4-2. That put Wheaton in a late elimination game which was scheduled to start at approximately 9:15 p.m. against Danville (26-13).

The winner of the late game advances to Saturday’s noon title game against Moline. The top two teams will advance to the Great Lakes regional, which starts Thursday in Midland, Mich.

Northbrook (43-10) was eliminated from the double-elimination tourney with an 11-9 loss to Danville. Moline also won its first Friday game 7-5 to eliminate Fairview Heights.
