Hoffman Estates, Palatine win sectional openers

Hoffman Estates 5, Rolling Meadows 4: Kasia Serwin scored twice and host Hoffman Estates weathered a 3-goal charge in the fourth quarter from Rolling Meadows (1-22) to advance in Schaumburg sectional play. The eighth-seeded Hawks (7-25) will meet the sectional’s top seed, Fremd, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Palatine 15, Deer Park 4: The eighth-seeded Pirates easily advanced in the sectional they are hosting by handling the Deerfield-Highland Park co-op team. Nicole Theis led the way with 6 goals; Rachel Chumbook had 4 goals and 5 steals, and Caroline Wojtas had 3 goals.

Palatine (14-17), which got 10 saves from goalie Hannah Otis, next meets the sectional’s top seed, Stevenson, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Glenbrook South 13, Maine West 5: The ninth-seeded Warriors (4-19) were eliminated in Glenbrook South sectional play by the host Titans (8-14), who will face top seed New Trier at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
