Sheriff waiting on lab results on possible Gacy victims

The Cook County sheriff's office is awaiting lab results on 10 DNA swabs that could determine the identities of some or all of the seven remaining unidentified victims of serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

It's expected to take another two to three weeks until the results from those 10 tests are back, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office said Monday.

Gacy was convicted of killing 33 young men and boys in the 1970s and burying most of them in the crawl space of his home in unincorporated Norwood Park Township. Gacy was executed for his crimes in 1994.

Last year, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart renewed an effort to identify the eight unknown victims. More than 140 people have come forward, and so far, DNA has confirmed the identity of one victim, William "Bill" George Bundy, a 19-year-old Chicago man who disappeared in 1976. Four other DNA samples the sheriff submitted for testing were not a match.

So far, investigators have gone through roughly 100 of the claims, doing interviews and follow-up investigation before determining whether to submit DNA to the lab, a spokeswoman said.
