Fremont staff learns to Stop Gas Fires through fire extinguisher training!

Early this week Countryside Fire District provided the Fremont Schools cafeteria and maintenance staff with fire extingusiher training. The staff learned of the various classes of fire and an understanding of what extinguishing agent would be necessary to put out a fire. Barb Stout of Fremont Schools replied, "I learned that the fire extinguishers here at school could put out most fires but water would not work on flammable liquids like gasoline and electrical fires." Public Education Coordinator Tony Rodkey mentioned, "Water in not always the answer." In addition, the campaign to Stop Gas Fires was introduced to all that attended. The Countryside Fire District submitted a grant proposal and was selected to carry out part of the National Gasoline Safety Project that is currently underway.

Safe Kids Worldwide and the Portable Fuel Container Manufacturers Association have teamed up to reduce the 1500 children injured from gasoline-related burns. "Our fire district has had three flash burn injuries the past year", Rodkey mentioned. Most parents understand that Gasoline and fire never mix, and children learn from what parents do, but the small percentage that believe it is okay to do are putting themselves and their family at a very high risk of injury.
