Algonquin library program looks at school fire
Submitted by Algonquin Area Public Library
On Monday, May 14, Jim Gibbons will speak on “Our Lady of the Angels Fire: A Chicago Tragedy” at 7 p.m. at the Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Drive in Algonquin.
Registration is required by calling the library at (847) 458-6060, ext. 143.
On Dec. 1, 1958, a fire broke out in the basement of Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago, cutting short the lives of 92 students and three nuns. Gibbons will present the story of this tragedy based on newspaper articles, eyewitness accounts and a personal connection. This program is for ages 18 and older due to somewhat graphic images.
Gibbons presented this program for the Marengo-Union Public Library in March. These presentations coincide with the renovation and recent reopening of the Our Lady of the Angels Church and rededication Mass with Cardinal George April 14.
