DeBruycker steps down at Crystal Lake South
Citing obligations to his growing family, Crystal Lake South’s Dan DeBruycker has resigned as the school’s boys basketball coach.
DeBruycker, 33, will remain a math teacher and an assistant athletic director at CL South, two roles that already keep him plenty busy.
Moreover, he and wife Jenna are expecting another addition to the burgeoning DeBruycker bunch; their third child is due in October, joining 4-year-old daughter Avery and 2-year-old son Evan.
“I could envision going through the summer and the fall doing just fine, but when November comes we’ll have a 4-year-old, a 3-year-old and a one-month old,” DeBruycker said. “While I’ve enjoyed my responsibility as the head basketball coach, at times I feel I had three full-time jobs between basketball, teaching five math classes and my duties as assistant athletic director.
“But my responsibility to my family is my first priority. This wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the best decision for me and my family.”
A Batavia graduate who went on to play at Aurora University, DeBruycker went 97-96 in seven seasons leading the Gators.
“I was disappointed when he first told me, of course,” CL South athletic director Jason Bott said, “but a decision any of our coaches make in the best interest of their families is a decision we fully support. So I’m happy for Dan in that regard.”
Bott said the basketball head coaching position will first be posted within District 155.
“We’ll see what people within the district are interested first,” Bott said. “Then if we feel there’s a need to look outside the district, we’ll do that.”
