MHS choir wins national competition

Mundelein High School’s female show choir was named Single-Gendered Grand Champion at the Grand River National Choral Competition.

The group, called Mundelein Lights, also won the award for best show design of the entire competition.

“The singers, band and crew worked so hard to rise to every challenge this year,” choral music director John Neubauer said. “(It is) definitely one of the very best show choirs in the entire country.”

The event was held in LaCrosse, Wis., March 16 and 17.

Three other Mundelein High School choral groups also placed well in the competition:

Ÿ Mundelein Sound took fifth place in overall competition.

Ÿ SoundFX, the all-male show choir, took fourth in the Single Gendered Choir category.

Ÿ The Master Singers placed fourth in the Concert Choir division.

Additionally, singer Charity Moody was named best female vocalist for her solo during the Lights program, when she performed “One Less Bell to Answer.”

The students were welcomed back home by friends and family Sunday, accompanied by a police escort.

Eighty-four Mundelein High students are part of these vocal groups. Neubauer and Cory Thompson direct the groups.
