Wauconda’s Sundquist no-hits Crystal Lake Central
Shawn Sundquist has had a busy senior year for Wauconda.
On Tuesday, the three-sport athlete turned in a particularly memorable performance.
The 6-foot-5 Sundquist fired a five-inning no-hitter, as Wauconda’s baseball team shut out Crystal Lake Central 11-0.
Kyle Bock belted a grand slam, doubled and knocked in 5 runs in support of his pitcher. Sundquist, who played football in the fall and basketball in the winter, struck out eight and walked only one.
Jake Ziolkowski also had a double for Wauconda.
Grayslake Central splits: The Rams finished up their trip to Orlando by splitting their final two games, losing to LaSalle (Philadelphia) 6-3 and then defeating Sidwell (Washington, D.C.) 8-5 in games played in the Disney Wide World of Sports complex.
The Rams finished 2-2 on the trip and improved their season record to 4-2 overall.
“Another great trip” Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. “We battled in every game. We are coming back 2-2 from this trip, but the kids got a lot of reps against outstanding competition.”
In the Rams’ victory over Sidwell, Brian Karol earned his varsity win, allowing 2 earned runs over the first 4 innings while striking out four and walking one. Christian Edwards earned the save, allowing 2 runs over the final 3 innings and with 3 strikeouts.
“Brian and Christian really battled against an aggressive-hitting team,” Whalen said. “They both made the clutch pitches when they needed to, and that’s a good sign of toughness.”
Offensively, GC was led by junior shortstop Ryan Fontana with a double and 2 singles. Ryan Hamrick had 2 hits and 2 RBI, Kristian Meehan added a triple and Jay Kleinofen smashed a 2-RBI double. Five of the 8 runs came with two outs.
In Grayslake Central’s loss to LaSalle, a private school located just outside of Philadelphia, Mark Ash was the tough-luck loser, as the senior right-handed allowed 2 earned runs over 4 innings. Fontana and Hamrick again paced the offense with 2 hits apiece. The Rams stranded nine runners and just could not come up with the big hit, Whalen said.
Grayslake Central returns to action on Saturday at Burlington Central.
Vernon Hills 7, Grayslake North 1: At Southern Illinois University, Tyler Feece made his second start of the season and earned the win for the Cougars.
Grayslake North scored in the first on an error to take the lead. But only one more Knights base runner reached third the remainder of the game as Feece (2-1) turned in a complete-game gem.
Cougars coach Jay Czarnecki said his team turned in one of its best games of the season, playing solid defense and having several different players contribute offensively. Jake Boyer, Austin Hagen and Jarrett Henson all knocked in runs.
Mundelein 11, Carbondale 1: At Carbondale, Ryan Dolin doubled twice and drove in 3 runs, and Torr Randau earned the win with 3 innings of 2-hit ball, as the Mustangs improved to 2-0 on their trip downstate and 7-1 overall.
Zach Osisek pitched 2 scoreless innings for Mundelein. Will Farmer added a single and 2 RBI in the win, and Jordan Bregenzer also had a double.
