Mundelein’s Singh reaches pinnacle with Stritch

Former Mundelein basketball standout Navjot Singh of Cardinal Stritch has added another honor to his lengthy list of accolades.

Singh has been named a Division II second-team All-American by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Singh’s second-team status is the highest in Stritch history.

He has also been named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Year while also being named CCAC All-Conference for the third time in his career.

“Nav really worked at all facets of his game throughout every season he’s been here,” said Stritch coach Drew Diener. “This year really showed how his hard work has paid off as he really wrapped up his career in a great way.”

Singh was second on the team in scoring this season with a career-high 510 points, which places him 29th highest in single-season scoring in program history. Averaging 14.2 points this year, Singh was second on the team in double doubles with five and second in rebounds with another career-high 248 boards.

For his career, Singh is a member of the Wolves’ 1,000 Point Club as he has 1,428 points. He is also just one of seven members in program history to be a part of the Wolves’ 700 Rebound Club as he finishes with 723 total rebounds.

The Wolves (30-6) completed the season ranked No. 6 in the NAIA and for the first time advanced to the NAIA Elite Eight.

Women’s track

Junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren) was named the Most Valuable Performer for Augustana’s indoor portion of the track and field season.

Jones capped off a superb season by capturing the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship in the 3,000 meters (10:21.38) at North Central College.

She also anchored the Vikings’ distance medley relay to victory in a school record time of 12:13.73, and finished third in the mile in 5:01.

Jones now ranks second on both Augustana’s all-time indoor mile list of performers and the school’s indoor 3,000 meter list. She opens the outdoor campaign as a two time all-conference performer in the 800.

Gurnee Park District

The Gurnee Park District offers fencing and gymnastics programs.

A fencing program for those ages 12 through 18 will be is held at the Woodland Middle School on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A variety of youth gymnastics programs will be conducted through three local gymnastic venues.

Still pitching in

Former Elk Grove all-area honorary softball captain Megan Huitink is stillinvolved with area players.

Huitink, who also played for DePaul and Illinois, serves as a pitching coach for last year’s all-area honorary captain Dani Goranson of Elk Grove.

The Illinois Bash has its own indoor warehouse in Elk Grove (1330 Jarvis St) for hitting and pitching instruction.

Each Wednesday is pitching night with Huitink.

Men’s hockey

Freshman Brandon Kirchens (Wheeling), a defenseman for Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y. helped the Tribunes win their first NJCAA national championship in men’s hockey. Kirchens finished the season with 9 goals and 22 assists.

Kivland remembered

Pat Kivland, who was the dean of Mid-Suburban League boys gymnastics coaches when he left the post in 2010 after 36 seasons, will be honored at Prospect’s home boys gymnastic meet on April 4.

Kivland died last Nov. 15 after fighting Pulmonary Fibrosis.

He was also a boys and girls diving coach and girls golf coach at Prospect.

Kivland retired from the physical education department in 2004. His boys gymnastics teams were MSL champs in 2004 and ’05. Kivland is a former gymnast at Prospect, where he placed second in the all-around at the 1965 state meet. He also set numerous records when he was a gymnast at Indiana.

There will be a brief presentation to Kivland’s family and a moment of silence for Pat.

“Pat was so dedicated to Prospect and gymnastics,” said Knights athletic director Tom Martindale. “We would like all friends of Pat to have the opportunity to come to Prospect and be a part of the evening. Pat touched so many lives.” Hamann golf outing

The John Hamann Golf Outing, supporting the John Hamann athletic fund, will be held June 14 at the Maple Meadows Golf Club.

There will be a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start with cocktails, prizes and dinner following the round.

The John Hamann family will award two $1,000 scholarships (male and female) to Willowbrook High School seniors every year in memory of John Hamann, who taught at the high school for 34 years and coached for 38 years.

Cost is $100 per person and $400 per group.

The golfing will be a four-person scramble.

You may attend only the dinner if you wish at 6:30 p.m.
