Carmel tops Lake Forest in 3

Henry Dominicis and Anthony Rengers slammed 10 kills each, as Carmel Catholic’s boys volleyball team outlasted host Lake Forest 25-23, 24-26, 25-12 Wednesday night.

Alex Dunlap dished out 27 assists for Carmel (2-0), while Will Collazo contributed 4 kills and 4 solo blocks. Kevin Fitzgibbons also had 4 kills. Matt Michalak served 12 of 12 with 2 aces.

“A huge offensive night for our hitters and setter,” Carmel coach Kevin Nylen said. “Kudos to Dunlap for coming back from injury. Our hitters put on an impressive show.”

Frankie Cohen led Carmel’s defensive effort with 6 digs.

“The defense, led by Cohen, was incredible, especially in Game 3, when our experience took over,” Nylen said. “Exciting night for us. We showed a lot of good things.”

Henry Lamp had 14 kills for Lake Forest in its season opener. Sam Watson added 4 kills for the Scouts.

Vernon Hills d. Glenbrook South: Thomas Robinson had 6 kills, 4 blocks and 2 aces, as the Cougars (2-0) won 25-20, 25-15.

Max Spiglanin added 5 kills on 5-of-5 hitting and 3 blocks, and Evan Borden also had 3 blocks for Vernon Hills. Michael Heinz and Jordan Porter also served 2 aces.

“We’re serving pretty well so far, and early in the season, that’s been enough,” Cougars coach Chris Curry said.

Buffalo Grove d. Lake Zurich: Sam Wacker had 9 kills for the Bison, who won their season opener 25-13, 25-20.

Lake Zurich (1-1) was led by Chris Carmody’s 12 kills and 2 blocks.

Stevenson d. New Trier: Jason Fleischman pounded 7 kills and Aaron Zalewski added five for the Patriots in their season-opening 25-21, 25-17 win.

Jonah May lofted 15 assists and Robbie Redman delivered 2 aces for Stevenson. Collin Ryan had 6 digs and 3 kills.

Lakes d. Antioch: Alex VerHagen’s 9 kills paced the Eagles in their 25-18, 25-21 win.

Lakes (1-1) also got contributions from Dalton Solbrig (2 aces), Mason Solbrig (2 blocks), Richard Galant (22 assists) and Sean Donovan (7 digs).
