Barrington maintains winning Fling ways
Barrington won a seventh straight championship in its own Spring Fling tournament after finishing sixth in the first one in 2005.
Fillies freshman Keenan Dolezal (3-0) pitched 4 innings and gave up 2 hits in a five-inning 10-0 triumph over Glenbrook North on Wednesday.
Dolezal struck out two while junior Cassidy Kraimer also struck out two batters in the fifth inning.
Leading the Barrington offense were Loren Krzysko (2-for-4, home run, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Savonnah Osmanski (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Jordan Wekony (2-for-3, 2 runs) and Danielle Di Iorio (double).
It was Krzysko's third homer run in the three days.
The junior third baseman hit a 2-run blast in the first inning to give Barrington a 2-0 lead.
“This was a nice way to start the season,” said Barrington coach Perry Peterson. “But there is still a lot of work to be done and our team realizes that.”
Maine West 9, Deerfield 1: Maine West first-year coach Amy Gonzales got her first career win as the Warriors produced 13 hits in the seventh-place game of the Spring Fling at Barrington.
Junior Ariel Smolik-Valles notched the win, throwing a 4-hitter and also going 3-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI.
“We really improved,” said Gonzales, whose team is 1-2.
Other top hitters for the Warriors were senior Angela Cruz (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI), junior Hanna Udischas (3-for-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI) and senior Katie Fitzgerald (1-for-4, 1 run, 2 RBI).
“It was a total team effort with everyone contributing,” said Gonzales, whose team did not commit an error. “Our intensity and focus was there throughout and we look forward to working together as a team and having a successful season.”
Palatine 5, Vernon Hills 3: SophomoreJules Udoni (1-0) got the win for the Pirates by striking out four and allowing 5 hits in the first 4 innings while junior Megan Hedstrom struck out five in the final 2 innings for the save.
Leading the offense for the visiting Pirates were Grace Rohrwasser (2-for-4, 1 run), Tori Walzak (1-for-4, RBI), Lauren Logan (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Hedstrom (2-for-3, home run, 1 run, RBI), Kayla Borgan (2 runs) and Kristen Rossi (1-for-1, 2 sacrifices, RBI).
Coach Jeff Manz's Pirates rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the win.
“We got down 2-0 and we talked about being fighters like my father-in-law,” said Manz, referring to longtime Rolling Meadows teacher and coach Dennis Lynch, who died last Friday after battling Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for the last 10 years. “The girls just fought back and Megan (Hedstrom) got us going offensively with an inside-the-park homer.”
Hedstrom belted a 2-run homer in Palatine's 5-2 loss to Prairie Ridge on Tuesday.
“We played good fundamental softball,” Manz added. “Defensively, we made two double plays (sparked by catcher Lauren Logan and Kayla Brogen).”
Manz is scheduled to bring his Pirates (1-1) to Arlington Heights today for a 4:30 p.m. contest with St. Viator (1-0).
Fremd 3, Prairie Ridge 1: Visiting Fremd improved to 2-0 as junior Ashlynne Schwantz (1-0) notched the win by throwing a 5-hitter with 3 strikeouts.
