Barrington springs forward
Barrington advanced to today's championship of its own Spring Fling softball tourney with a 12-2 victory over Hersey on Tuesday.
The Fillies (2-0) will face Glenbrook North (2-0) at 4:30 p.m. for the title.
Hersey (1-1) and Zion-Benton (1-1) will square off for third place.
Barrington freshman Keenan Dolezal (2-0) won her second straight game, allowing 4 hits and striking out three in 5 innings.
Junior Cassidy Kraimer went the final 2 innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out three.
Senior Jordan Wekony (3-for-5, 4 RBI) and junior Raegan Fingerman (2-for-5, double, RBI) led the Fillies offense while Haley Henriksen hit a solo homer for Hersey in the bottom of first inning.
The Huskies shortstop was injured while covering second base on a steal attempt in the second inning and did not return to the game.
Junior Sarah Platt (1-1) went all seven innings for the Huskies, who now have 4 homers for the season.
“We had a real consistent team effort,” said Barrington coach Perry Peterson. “I think our girls are looking forward to the championship game.”
Senior K.D. Madden also doubled for Barrington.
Lake Zurich 6, Maine West 1: Senior Katie Fitzgerald (2-for-3, triple, 1 run), sophomore Abbey Herling (1-for-3, RBI) and senior Angela Cruz (1-for-3) led the offense for Maine West (0-2), which will face Central Suburban North rival Deerfield (0-2) at 4:30 p.m. today to wrap up tourney play.
Warriors junior pitcher Tara Nykiel struck out six.
“Tara did a good job on the mound,” said Warriors first-year coach Amy Gonzales. “We are still learning a great deal as a young team. We need to continue taking our opportunities on offense and being aggressive. We need to tighten up on defense and not make the mental mistakes.”
