Look for more local produce at Cary Farmers Market

Starting this week, more locally grown produce from area farmers will be available at the Cary Farmers Market on Sundays. Due to the colder spring, some produce has been delayed.

“Our market features a number of award-winning local growers who have a splendid array of farm fresh produce, but the colder spring has delayed some of their harvest,” said Suzanne Corr, market manager and executive director of the Cary Grove Area Chamber of Commerce. “This Sunday, June 23, we will begin to see a larger selection, but we may not see an abundance of some of our best produce, such as locally grown corn, till mid July.”

The Cary Farmers Market features about 25 vendors with a variety of products including several local farmers with meats, eggs, cheeses, and a vast array of fruits and vegetables. In addition, other vendors offer a variety of baked goods, specialty dips and spices, dressings, salsas, honey, fresh flowers, plants, soaps, jams and jellies, fresh condiments and more. New this year is a local producer of safe organic home cleaning products and a knife sharpener.

In its third season, the Cary Farmers Market is held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday from June through Sept. 29 in the Metra Train commuter parking lot near the intersection of High Road and West Main Street in downtown Cary. Each week the market attracts hundreds of area residents. Each week the selection at the market varies based on the local harvest and growing season.

“About 90 percent of our vendors are the producer or grower,” Corr said. “The products are natural, local, homemade and high in quality. The market has been one of the most rewarding community events the chamber has ever initiated.”

Corr added. “We receive many positive responses and accolades for bringing the market to the community.”

The first Sunday of each month at the Cary Farmers Market the chamber features a special event day with extra vendors. Free chamber shopping bags are given to the first 100 shoppers, free bags of groceries are raffled off, and there is outdoor music. The next Special Event Sundays are scheduled for July 1, Aug. 5 and Sept. 2.
