Rosemont's new venue hiring hundreds
The village of Rosemont kicked off a three-day job fair Sunday to fill hundreds of full- and part-time positions at the city's new entertainment district. Representatives from Adobe Gila's Margarita Fajita Cantina, Five Roses Pub, Kings Lanes & Lounge and Zanies Comedy Club received applicants in the first floor ballroom at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 5555 N. River Road. The fair continues today from noon to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 10 p.m. Full story.
DuPage authorities investigate officer-involved shooting
An off-duty police officer shot a person Saturday morning in a parking lot at the Fermilab property, the DuPage County sheriff's office said Sunday. One person suffered a gunshot wound in the shooting and was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, authorities said. The person was listed Sunday in stable condition. Full story.
Abducted Palatine boy found unharmed
An 8-year-old Palatine boy who authorities say was abducted Thursday night by his mother's boyfriend was found safe Friday night in Chicago's West Garfield Park neighborhood. Reform aims to bring uniformity to sex ed
Most students in Illinois public schools already are learning about the facts of life, but some legislators say lessons vary widely and are, in some cases, erroneous. In the face of nearly nonstop messages of romance and couples, flowers and lingerie, love and lust, 37-year-old John Zielinski of Des Plaines wakes up on the morning after Valentine's Day as he always does — alone, in his single bed, in his parent's home with his virginity intact. “I'm not 40, so you can't call me a 40-year-old virgin,” Zielinski says with a chuckle. “I have the same weaknesses and desires as every other guy, but I was able to persevere through that.” Full story.
Schaumburg surrenders to emerald ash borer
The village of Schaumburg is embarking on a 10-year, $9 million program to eradicate the emerald ash borer, that will eventually result in taking down most of the village's ash trees and replacing them with a variety of other species. “There's going to be a lot of trees missing,” Schaumburg Village Manager Ken Fritz concedes. Organizers of a bone-marrow-registry drive held in Wheaton over the weekend said they were delighted by the response, which saw 100 people sign up on Saturday alone and more line up to help Sunday. Stolen horses located, on their way home
Four horses stolen from a Spring Grove farm have been found and are making their way back to their stables, breeder Claudia Haugh said. The four Friesian breed horses were found not far from Haugh's farm, where she is raising 15 horses, she said. She owns two of the four animals and is watching two of them for someone else. Suburban mentors help students find success
Ric Noreen, a retired Kraft executive from Vernon Hills, always wanted more children. And in many ways, Jeremy Thomas, the 16-year-old Maywood boy he mentors through LINK Unlimited, is like the son he never had. Chicago-based LINK Unlimited pairs low-income, academically promising black students entering private school, with mentors from corporate America who have similar interests. Three hurt when crowd turns on performers
At least three people were hurt in Elgin early Sunday when a concert crowd turned violent after the band they were expecting didn't show up to perform, police reports state. When another band took the stage, according to reports, a crowd member threw a bottle at the performers, leading to a melee. Full story.
Hanover Park opens long-awaited police station
Hanover Park Police Department's 99 employees are used to working in a 36-year-old building meant to accommodate just 40 people. They'll finally move into a 53,000-square-foot, $15 million facility, which officially opened Saturday with a dedication event. “We're a progressive police department, and now we finally have a modern facility to reflect that,” Police Chief David Webb said.
