Off-duty officer shoots person in Fermilab parking lot

An off-duty police officer shot a person Saturday morning in a parking lot at the Fermilab property, the DuPage County sheriff’s office said Sunday.

The unidentified person wounded in the shooting was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, authorities said. A spokeswoman for the hospital said the patient was in stable condition as of late Sunday afternoon. No other information about the patient was available.

Police were not releasing many details about the shooting Sunday. According to the sheriff’s office, the off-duty officer reportedly witnessed a hit-and-run crash near Route 59 and Dale Avenue in West Chicago. West Chicago police would not comment Sunday on the initial crash.

Using a personal vehicle, the off-duty officer followed the offending vehicle to the Fermilab property in Batavia, where the officer confronted the other vehicle’s occupants and fired shots, striking one occupant, sheriff’s police said.

Authorities did not identify the officer or the department for which he or she works.

Dawn Domrose, a sheriff’s department spokeswoman, said Sunday afternoon that police were not releasing additional details pending continued investigation. Paul Darrah, a spokesman for the DuPage County state’s attorney office, said that as of Sunday afternoon, no charges had been filed in the case.

A Fermilab spokeswoman on Sunday said that no Fermilab employees or visitors were involved in the shooting. She referred all other questions to the sheriff’s office.
